Hong Kong Legal Week 2024

I. Panel Discussion

As an annual flagship event of the Department of Justice, the Hong Kong Legal Week 2024 (“HKLW 2024”), under the theme of “Hong Kong Common Law System: World Class Springboard to China and Beyond”, was held from 4-8 November 2024.

Day 3 of the HKLW 2024, themed “Beyond Litigation: The Vibrant Landscape of Alternative Dispute Resolution of Hong Kong”, featured several panel discussions and fireside chat on alternative dispute resolution in Hong Kong. In the panel discussion titled “Mediation in Action: Harmony and Peace for All”, speakers explored how mediation can help build a harmonious and stable society.

Day 4 of the HKLW 2024, themed “Joint Contribution to the Construction of Rule of Law in the GBA”, featured several sessions on the rule of law and alternative dispute resolution in the GBA. In the session titled “Greater Bay Area Mediation - Effectively coordinating ‘One Country, Two Systems and Three Jurisdictions’”, mediators from the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Macao conducted a mock mediation, followed by a panel discussion to analyse the differences in the approach or procedures on mediation between the three jurisdictions in the GBA, and understand cross-boundary disputes, cultural co-ordination and communication, technology and online mediation. Thereafter, there was a panel discussion which discussed and explained the GBA Mediation Platform.

II. Hong Kong Mediation Lecture 2024

As part of the HKLW 2024, the Department of Justice and Herbert Smith Freehills co-organised the Hong Kong Mediation Lecture: Mediation and Sustainable Development along the Belt and Road, on Day 3 of the HKLW 2024. During the Lecture, Prof. Shahla Ali, a mediator with the World Bank and the Energy Community Panel, explored the unique challenges and opportunities involved in the use of mediation in deals relating to natural resources, particularly under the Belt and Road Initiatives. The Lecture concluded with a discussion of the potential for mediation and related conflict prevention tools to contribute to shared sustainable development objectives.
