Hong Kong Legal Week 2025
I. Panel Discussion
The Hong Kong Legal Week 2025 (“HKLW 2025”), themed “Linking Laws, Bridging Worlds”, was held from 1 to 5 December 2025.
The afternoon session on Day 3, themed “Capital of Mediation”, featured two sessions. Session 1, titled “A World in Dialogue - Mediation for Peace & Prosperity” explored mediation’s critical role in resolving inter-state disputes as well as international investment and commercial conflicts between states and private entities – demonstrating how effective mediation fosters peace, stability, and shared economic prosperity worldwide.
Session 2, titled “Mediation in Action”, discussed the Government’s latest developments in its “Deepening Mediation Culture” initiative and other mediation schemes in the community for resolving disputes including financial disputes, building management disputes and neighborhood disputes, etc.
II. Hong Kong Mediation Lecture 2025
As part of the HKLW 2025, the Department of Justice and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer co-organised the Hong Kong Mediation Lecture: Behind the Scenes: The Role of Mediation in Entertainment Dispute Resolution, on Day 3 of the HKLW 2025.
Branded as the Oriental Hollywood, Hong Kong is renowned for its entertainment industry producing many famous Kung-fu movies and Canto Pop. With the recent opening of Kai Tak Sports Park of which Kai Tak Stadium has a capacity of hosting world class concerts, Hong Kong’s entertainment industry has turned over a new leaf. Nevertheless, it presents both business opportunities and disputes for the industry. Against this background, Professor Sungkee Hong, Chairman of the Content Disputes Resolution Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea, shared insights into the expanding role of mediation within the entertainment industry, highlighting how tailored, “behind-the-scenes” solutions can address the unique challenges and dynamics inherent in entertainment disputes.
