Investment Law and Investor-State Mediation Training
In October 2018, the Department of Justice, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the Asian Academy of International Law (AAIL) co-organised the Investment Law and Investor-State Mediator Training Course (“Training Course”), the first investment law-cum-investment mediation training course in Asia.
The Investment Agreement under the framework of the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA), concluded on 28 June 2017, provides mediation as a means of dispute resolution. The Training Course is one of the Department of Justice’s initiatives towards developing Hong Kong into an international investment law and international investment dispute resolution skills training base. The goal is to build a team of investment mediators in Asia to handle international investment disputes.
The Training Course has been conducted multiple times, including in October-November 2019, virtually in October 2021 and March 2022, and most recently in May and November 2024.
Over the years, the Training Course has offered investment law and investor-state mediator training to more than 370 state officials and mediators from about 40 jurisdictions, including Mainland China, ASEAN countries, the Middle East and Africa. The programme has consistently garnered positive feedback.
